REACH and RoHS

REACH Background:

The European Union’s REACH legislation entered into force on 1st June 2007 to streamline and improve the former legislative framework for chemicals in the European Union (EU). REACH regulates substances (chemicals) including substances in preparations (mixtures) and substances in products (articles).

Article 3(3) of the REACH regulation defines an article as “an object which during production is given a special shape, surface or design which determines its function to a greater degree than its chemical composition”. (ECHA, 2011)  Per this definition Intercon1 is considered to be a manufacturer and distributor of “Articles”.  To comply with REACH regulation, Intercon1 must determine whether there are Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) used within the products it manufactures and the concentration of these SVHCs.

Interon1’s position on REACH compliance:

During the course of manufacturing Intercon1 products, substances, materials, and solvents may be used that might fall under REACH compliancy requirements.  Most of these process-related materials and solvents are washed or wiped off assemblies before they are packaged and shipped to our customers.  Therefore reporting of these substances is not required.

At Intercon1, we are proud to offer products that comply with REACH regulation, whenever possible.  The process of surveying our suppliers is a continuous process, and we have determined many of our products to be REACH compliant.  For REACH compliance status on a specific product, please contact us.

RoHS Definition:

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) legislation (directive 2011/65/EU) came into force on January 2, 2013, replacing directive 2002/95/EU.  RoHS legislation aims to restrict the use of dangerous substances commonly used electronic and electrical equipment.  The following table indicates the dangerous substances defined by the RoHS directive, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) numbers, and their threshold limits under the legislation.

SubstanceCAS NumberThreshold Limit
Lead (Pb)7439-92-10.1%, by weight
Cadmium (Cd)7440-43-90.01%, by weight
Mercury (Hg)7439-97-6100 ppm, not to be intentionally added
Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI))18540-29-90.01%, by weight
Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)0.1%, by weight
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)0.1%, by weight

Intercon 1’s position on RoHS compliance:

At Intercon1, we are proud to offer products that comply with RoHS regulation, whenever possible.  Many of our products have been determined to be RoHS compliant.  For RoHS compliance status on a specific product, please contact us.
